Moeraki Boulders – Oamaru New Zealand

One place to visit if you come to the South Island New Zealand, simply amazing!

Just a couple of hours drive south from Christchurch [map], amazing huge spherical stone formations, largest to be up to 3 meters in diameter and several tons in weight. They scatter along the Koekohe Beach near Moeraki. These gray stone spheres (septarian concretions) were formed naturally some 60 million years ago under the ancient sea floor  sediment, and created by shoreline erosion over time.

It’s well worth the effort in finding this beautiful place. We had a great day at the beach, the beach is definitely too cold to swim in, however there is a nice cafe nearby to chill out for the afternoon with the family. Beautiful scenery, friendly people, and grab yourself a souvenir before you leave. If you can’t capture the beauty with your snappy camera, you can buy quality prints at the shop.
