A sunrise boat ride is the highlight of a trip to Varanasi, when the river and temples along the riverfront are bathed in the soft morning light. Here, locals wash clothes, perform yoga exercises, offer flowers and incense to the river, and take a ritual dip. 700 temples cover more than 7km of riverbank, but none of them are as holy as the river itself.

by Howard Liu 劉育豪
Varanasi, India
Pilgrims rush their way down to the ghats and into the Ganges River, or “Great Mother” as it is known to Hindus. Around 60,000 people take a holy dip every day along a 7km area of the river, providing millions of Indians with an important link to their spirituality. Waist-high in water, they face the rising sun in prayer and perform a complex series of Hindu rituals. This exercise is said to free the soul from earthly sin and forms a spiritual and religious legacy that goes back nearly 3,000 years.
